“In the first days, I felt like a swimmer in a full suit of clothes. Every task I took for granted in the U.S., like knowing where to buy a bottle of tonic water or toilet paper or nail clippers, was not quite what it is back home, despite the way Leipzig seemed very like the U.S. at street level. The garbage and recycling were bewilderingly if also impressively complex—something like 10 different categories to be kept separate. I remember a night in those first days, when I couldn’t find the aforementioned tonic. I noticed a rhubarb soda at my local pizzeria, and at home made myself a very unsatisfying cocktail of gin and rhubarb soda, without ice, as I also couldn’t figure out where to get ice cube trays yet.”

Yesterday I sat with Artem on a field in centre of Moscow and I let everything out that I had to say. I sat with a cigarette on the grass staring at the street lamps and he had a suggestion - we went to a cafe which reduces its pastries at about 10 or 11 at night. We went before, the last night I broke down. The cashier recognised us and we came out with a bag full of pastries and Rosie called me and I went to meet her. I sat in an expensive club with a glass of wine looking at the main church of Moscow across the river and realised I had a bag full of pastries and English books and couldn’t help but laugh a bit. Things are ok somehow.
I met another English girl who had studied in Nottingham at the other university there. I realised then that I am in no way typically British, but not that it is a bad things. She was a nice girl - pleasant and open, working as a tailor in London. She said she was jealous of the people she met who travel so much as she feels like she would not be able to leave home and to leave her family. I realised then that, although oscillating between Russia and German-speaking countries seems somewhat romantic, it’s quite empty really when all you really are looking for is that solidarity at the centre and I feel like I’m swinging in limbo with an array of shifting and varying faces that fall through my fingers like dry sand.

Nottingham Railway Station
This is what the foyer looked like last year, but it’s now been turned into a building site.
When I left Nottingham on Monday, the main entrance/exit had become an exit only and the detour to the temporary entrance added at least a quarter of a mile, including extra steps and a lack of visible train information. I suggest:-
- allow an extra 10 minutes.
- if you have heavy cases, young children or use a wheelchair, contact the station in advance to discuss the problem.

Doctor Who Mystery - Who is Clara?
I’ve no inside information, so this is just a theory.
In the black and white days of William Hartnell, his grandaughter Susan left the series. In the past 40+ years, she has lost her memory and regenerated as Clara.
We may find out on Saturday (or the mystery may continue).

Afterthought on Sunday 19/05: I was wrong. The answer was much more complex.

Interviewer: is that how you pick up girls?
Bradley: I actually pick up girls with various displays of origami.
Interviewer: You do not.
Bradley: Yes, I do. It’s quite a famous tactic here in England. The better you are at origami, the more women you attract.
Interviewer: And you’re sure it’s not because they recognise you from the show?
Colin: Well, generally they’re too distracted by the origami.
Bradley: Yes. My house is origami. I’ve got a car that I drove here today that is made from origami.
Interviewer: It must be very environmentally friendly.
Bradley: Yeah, big time.
Interviewer: Alright, Colin, coming back to Merlin - do you believe in magic?
Colin: After watching Bradley drive around in his origami car, I believe in everything.
Interviewer: Okay. Do you own anything origami?
Colin: No, I’m an origami wannabe. I’ve actually started up a support group because some people have a deficiency in their systems where they can’t actually fold things. I’m a part of that group, and it seems to affect people from Northern Ireland. Anyone prone to paper cuts shouldn’t even enter the origami game. It’s a rough industry and certainly if you don’t have thick skin, you’re going to lose.
Interviewer: Let us guess, we’re your first interview of the day, aren’t we?
Colin: Yes!
Interviewer: And this is how you like to start your day?
Bradley: …I usually start my day with origami.
”— Best interview ever!!! (via bittsandstuff)
