Ein AusLANDER |
British guy who worked in Forensic Psychology for 6 years but needed to experience something else. Took a leap of faith and made a change to pull off an Houdini escape act to Berlin, sidetracked for 8 months in Edinburgh by accident. Walking around Berlin lost and confused for a month. Realised that Clinical Psychology is the right fit for me so trying to get back on track with that. Recently, moved to Munich, Germany for work where luckily my lovely German girlfriend lives. Yesterday we finally made our way to Mauerparks Bearpit karaoke. This was near Eberswalder strasse. With the way that people flocked there and the movement of fairly big crowds it felt like a mass pilgrimige.
For people who tend to report that Germans do not have a sense of humour; they would have left pleasantly surprised. There was so much comedy, variety and character on show. It was a fantastic time and good to meet up with a local friend. We’ve also been hanging out with a Korean girl that we met in the hostel.
Later on led to some interesting conversations as the late night stealthily descended upon on us. It was strikingly interesting to see how us British tend to dance around a topic without getting to the point of what we want to say. This really contrasts with German directness and became especially amusing to us when we realised it was difficult for us to control despite being aware. Let me paraphrase an example for when we want to move from one venue to another.
English version: Hey guys do you maybe think that it’s perhaps time that we start to think about whether or not we want any food and when or where we might go and consider what food we might want?
German version: I’m hungry lets leave now to get food.
